The US Patent No.6227202 read “The inventor indeed was able to successfully repair / regenerate the organs in human beings”.
Dr. Balkrishna Matapurkar
Stem cell research for regeneration of organs is happening right here in India, and the man who is at the forefront of this, is Dr. Balkrishna Ganapat Rao Matapurkar, from Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi. In fact, he has been granted the first US patent from the American patent for his technique is successfully regenerating organs in human beings. Using stem cells, Dr. Matapurkar was able to regenerate organs like the uterus, urethra and ureter in animals and experiments are on to regenerate organs like the kidneys and parts of the intestine. The technique has been perfected in monkeys. As is already known stem cells, which are present in the body have the capacity to transform into full organs and there is obviously no question of biological rejection, as the new organ is recognized as “self”.
Only limited successful human trials have been conducted with regeneration of cells having proved successful in curing incisional hernia among humans.
Dr. Matapurkar has worked hard for 25 years in this field and hopes that one day it may become possible to regenerate even the brain. But obviously, all that is a long way off. He has sought a grant of Rs. 1.5 crore to set up an Organ Regeneration Research centre at Maulana Azad Medical College. And so, here is to the future of organ regeneration in India.
