Since March 2003 there has been regular cadaver transplant activity in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Prior to this period very few cadaver organs had been retrieved and transplanted. Some cadaver organs were also received from neighboring states. The model followed in AP has been to create regular awareness about organ donation among both the public and medical fraternity. Most of the ICUs in Hyderabad have been senstitized about the donation process by doing workshops on brain death. To cousel families the hospitals have called on MOHAN Foundation’s counselors. In some instance hospitals like Nizam Institure of Medical Science, the local expertise has been used to counsel families. Besides kidneys, heart and liver transplants have also taken place.
So far 71 families have been counseled by MOHAN Foundation and local hospital counselors for organ donation and have had success with 22 Donations (31% sucesss).
Hospitals that have shared cadaver organs include: Nizam Institute of Medical Science, Global Hospitals, Medwin Hospital, Kamineni Hospital, Apollo Hospitals, Care Hospital, Mediciti Hospital, Banjara Hospital and LVPrasad Eye Institute .
What is required now is to have common organ sharing waiting lists and have more media publicity to promote the goodness of cadaver transplant programme.
